How Often Should You Replace Windshield Wiper Blades?

Windshield wipers are vital safety components when it comes to our vehicles. They may not be used every day, but they are certainly necessary whenever you need improved visibility in unfavorable weather conditions. Windshield wipers are on the exterior of your vehicle, making them susceptible to wear and tear over time.

All windshield wipers are made of rubber, a material that degrades over time. Depending on the quality of the rubber and the wiper blade, they should be swapped out every 6-12 months for optimal performance. Besides replacing them on an interval basis, you can also look out for the following telltale signs of failing wiper blades:

  • If your windshield wipers leave streaks or smear the water (instead of clearing it), it is evident that they are no longer effective and safe to use.
  • If the rubber part on the blades is frayed, cracked, warped, or fallen off, it is time to replace your windshield wiper blades. Without the rubber intact and in good shape, your windshield will not be cleared off.
  • If the windshield wiper blade does not touch your windshield completely or reach all areas of the windshield glass, it is time to change them out.
  • If the windshield wipers squeak and squeal every time they are turned on, please consider changing the blade. The rubber on the wipers has likely deteriorated.

To maintain your wiper blades, we recommend cleaning your windshield with a paper towel or rag and glass cleaner. This makes sure that all large debris doesn’t cling onto the wiper blades. With an even surface for the wiper blades to glide across, it is more likely to not malfunction.

Even the most expensive windshield wiper blades on the market don’t last any more than a year. To make sure you’re safely driving in the rain, fog, and snow, please replace your windshield wipers on time.
